Africa Movies Academic Awards comes to Lagos

Suicide: Two women who attempted to jump into lagoon rescued

Barely six days after a Lagos based medical practitioner, Dr. Allwell Orji, committed suicide by jumping from the Third Mainland Bridge into the Lagos lagoon, the Police in Lagos yesterday, rescued two women who attempted to jump into the lagoon from the Third Mainland and Carter bridges. They claimed during an interview that they attempted suicide in order to escape from those they owed. One of the women, Taiwo Titilayo Momoh, a textile dealer at Balogun market created a scene on the bridge as she insisted to be left alone to end it all, so as to be free from the debt she owed some importers. NDLEA arrests drug dealers with N183m cannabis

advertisement The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested two suspected cannabis barons while also seizing 18,294kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of N183m. One of the suspects, a Bauchi-based suspected cannabis dealer, Mohammed Mustapha was apprehended at Uzebba, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State where he was facilitating the shipment of 7,272kg of cannabis to Bauchi State. According to the spokesperson for the agency, another 3,072kg of cannabis was traced to the warehouse of another suspected dealer, Lucky Akele at Uzebba. About 7,950kg of cannabis with few bags of cement used as cover inside a Dangote cement truck were intercepted at Enweh area of the state. The Lagos Sate Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said on Wednesday that it had recovered the  corpse of Dr Allwell Orji who plunged into the lagoon on Sunday. Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, General Manager of LASEMA, told newsmen, in Lagos that the body was recovered at about 4.00 p.m. by the Marine Police. The general manager expressed his condolences on behalf of the State Government and declared the search closed. Newsmen recall that Orji, a medical doctor, was said to have been driven to the Third Mainland Bridge by his driver on Sunday, alighted and took a fatal plunge into the lagoon. The deceased, working at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Surulere area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, drowned before help could come. The police had on Tuesday recovered a corpse they thought was Orji’s but rejected by the family.

Gunmen kidnap teacher in Ekiti

Gunmen on Monday kidnapped a teacher identified as Mr. Festus Olatunde Oke along Ise-Ikere road as he returned from work. It was learnt that Oke had visited Ado Ekiti from his station and was returning with his wife and mother, when the gunmen intercepted them. A source said the kidnappers collected the mobile phones of his wife and mother and abandoned them in his Toyota Camry car in which they were travelling, before leading Oke into the bush. US officials are offering assistance to British authorities after an attack Wednesday on the Houses of Parliament in London that police there are treating as terrorism. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident by his national security adviser H.R. Workers threaten to shut down Arik Air on Thursday

The labour unions in the aviation sector have threatened to shut down the operations of Arik Air on Thursday over the airline’s management’s failure to reinstate its sacked members and other issues. The unions are the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers. The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria had on February 9 taken over the airline. The takeover was as a result of the airline’s huge indebtedness to the company and other creditors, both local and foreign. AMCON had thereafter appointed Capt. Researchers Build An AI That’s Better At Reading Lips Than Humans

Scientists at the Oxford University have claimed to develop a new computer software program that can lip-read better than humans, which might give the hearing impaired a helping hand. The system was trained on thousands of hours of BBC news programs, the media channel said Friday. The new artificial intelligence (AI) software system called “Watch, Attend and Spell (WAS)” has been developed by Oxford University in collaboration with Google’s DeepMind. The AI system uses computer vision and machine learning methods to learn how to lip-read from a dataset made up of more than 5,000 hours of TV footage from the BBC. The videos included more than 118,000 sentences and a vocabulary of 17,500 words spoken by more than 1,000 different people. Hackers Threaten To Remotely Wipe iPhones, Demand Ransom From Apple

This is horrible news for iPhone owners! A group of hackers claims to have access to credentials of 300 million iCloud accounts and is threatening to remotely wipe them clean if Apple doesn’t pay up. Known as the Turkish Crime Family, the hackers have threatened to make use of the data to access customers’ accounts and wipe their Apple devices in case the company fails to pay the ransom until April 7, reports Motherboard. The hackers have demanded $75,000 in Bitcoin or Ethereum cryptocurrency or $100,000 worth of iTunes gift cards in exchange for deleting the alleged cache of data. Meningitis claims 16 lives in Niger

An outbreak of Cerebro Spiral Meningitis has killed at least no fewer than 16 persons at Tungan Jika and Mazakari villages of Magama Local Government Area out of 31 cases in four local governments of Niger State. The State Commissioner of Health and Hospital Services, Dr. Mustapha Mohammed Jibrin, on Tuesday made the disclosure in Minna at a press briefing. Jibrin said all deaths recorded were from Magama Local Government Area, with eight of them female and seven male, who were within the age of one and 20.
